Well, thought this was a "safe" neighborhood when we moved here --- but...
This past week, my next door neighbor was burglarized. This happened in the early morning hours while the couple, their two kids and the dog slept upstairs! Back door was jimmied and taken were the husband's gun collection and the keys to one car, which was also taken. I want to know --- what's wrong with that dog???
Yesterday, a house on our block was set afire. This house had been recently sold, the former owner just moved out and the new owners hadn't yet moved in, so it was vacant. For about six hours, fire trucks lined our street. I am told, by another neighbor, that there is a "firebug" in the neighborhood. Just down the alley from me, a van was set afire and also several dumpsters. Someone's security cameras caught the perp --- a skateboarding teenager who has yet to be identified or caught.
Concerning, to me, as my car is parked in this same alley.
I am now double bolting my back door and keeping the outside lights on at night.
But I do feel vulnerable living here so utterly alone...
And goodness, feeling so alone and vulnerable makes me miss Bob so much and I have fallen back into the deepest grief........ I spent a lot of today just crying. And wondering -- why? Why, oh why, did this have to happen to Bob and me.......
And feeling so alone and lonely tonight...

Do you have smoke detectors in your home? And you can always get a whole-house security system that rings to the service company. Maybe a few video cameras set in and about the house? It may not be a quick fix, but once it's installed you would have peace of mind.
It's hard being alone and there are very lonely moments, dark moments, unmet needs and want's. Learning to be alone, embracing it is a challenge but it has upsides and it brings you things like courage and confidence. Things that seemed to leave you when Bob did.
Fear is a terrible thing. It controls us if we let it. Please don't let it control you. Lock your house and your car, leave the light on if you think it helps but don't let fear of things you can't control paralyze you. Live your life...
I'm sorry this happened to you and Bob - it just isn't fair is it? I hope for the best for you and I do enjoy your posts.
What would Kona do if you had an intruder? How about motion-detect outside lights? The other plus is that they turn on for you if you arrive home after dark so you can see even if you forgot to leave the lights on. I don't know, but maybe there are motion-detect recordings of barking dogs. Big barking dogs.

Yes, we have smoke detectors -- but our security system is called "KONA" used to be "BOOMER" who was great at security duty -- not sure if the new version (KONA) will be as good --- but I do know she has a very BIG bark and is very attentive to anything going on outside or at the door. I have a motion detector light that does not work! another thing to put pm the list "of things to do".....
